Fighting the snow in East Liverpool is literally an uphill battle.

And since the flakes keep flying, street department employees like Charlie Harpold keep driving.

Harpold and his colleagues give new meaning to the term maneuverability.

At times it feels like a game of chance, will we be lucky enough to make it up this road? Steep inclines and narrow alleys definitely up the anty.

"You have these cars they're just virtually in your way," Harpold said.

But after backing up and pulling forward a dozen times, skill and determination usually prevail. So Harpold moves on to the next challenge.

When all is said and done, the street department is responsible for 400 miles of roadways. Add in all the snow and hills, and there's plenty of wear and tear both on the crew and the equipment.

"Money is getting to be an issue with running the trucks 24 hours a day," said Ryan Estell, service safety director in East Liverpool. "There are lots of parts breaking off of them. We've gone through 10 blades in the last week."

But there's no rest for the weary until all the snow is cleared.
