You're not alone if you have trouble getting out of bed these days.

We don't necessarily "hibernate," but the conditions are favorable for more sleep.

Human sleep is dictated by sunlight. Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland. Melatonin gives us that groggy, just woke up feeling. Darkness causes a surge in Melatonin production, and drowsiness leads to sleep. Since there's less daylight, we have more Melatonin in our systems.

While there's no biological need for more sleep, the chemical difference leads to it. Plus the conditions are perfect for sleep. Some like it cool, others prefer a toasty warm house. Either will work just as well for a sound sleep. It's the darkness that triggers the zzz's.
