A tornado watch raised eyebrows around the Valley on November 14, 2011. So, how common is a tornado this time of year? Here are some of the statistics:
Since 1950, 59% of all Ohio tornadoes occured in May, June, or July. Around 4% have taken place in November. (Below the EF = Enhanced Fujita Scale)
Stark County:
Nov. 16, 1965 an EF-2, 300-yard wide, 6-mile track twister caused 2 fatalities and 9 injuries
Nov. 10, 2002 an EF-1
Nov. 12, 2003 an EF-1
Summit County:
Nov. 10, 2002 an EF-2
On November 10, 2002 there were 19 tornadoes reported in Ohio.
Mahoning County did see a winter tornado. On Feb. 16, 1976, an EF-2 tornado was reported. It was 600-yards wide and was only on the ground for a mile and a half. There were no injuries.
In Pennsylvania, it was November 10, 2002 when a strong tornado hit Clark in Mercer County. Homes were leveled and an elderly man was killed. Nineteen people were injured.
Another November tornado was up in Erie County. It was an EF-2 with 2 injuries, and it happened Nov. 22, 1953.
Overall, the year with the most Ohio tornadoes was 1992. There were 61.
Since 1950, the lowest tornado tally was in 1988. Not one tornado was confirmed that year.
