Many people ask about the difference between a watch or a warning and not knowing could endanger your life. When a WATCH is issued, it means conditions are favorable for the development of severe weather conditions. For example, if a TORNADO WATCH is issued for your area, it means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain, and tornadoes within the watch area during the duration of the watch.

A WARNING means that danger is imminent and is occurring within the warning area. A TORNADO WARNING means a tornado has been spotted on the ground or Doppler Radar is indicating a possible tornado within the storm. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING means a severe thunderstorm is occurring within the warning area. When a WARNING is issued, you should seek shelter IMMEDIATELY as dangerous conditions are occurring within the warning cone.

Here are several safety tips that can save your life if a tornado happens near you.

If a tornado is approaching take shelter in a basement. If you have no basement, find shelter in an interior room like a closet or small bathroom. Hiding under heavy furniture like tables or desks is ideal.

One thing to remember is stay away from windows. Broken glass flying through the air is one of the most dangerous elements of a tornado.  If you live in a mobile home and a tornado is approaching, get out because mobile homes are not safe during strong winds. Head for low ground or another shelter.

Do not get in your car and try to outrun the tornado. Being in a car is just as dangerous as staying in a mobile home. If you’re in a shopping center or another public building head for designated shelter but remember, stay away from windows. If you’re driving in open country and spot a tornado, get out of your car and head for low ground.

It is important to remember that ALL thunderstorms can be dangerous. All thunderstorms produce lightning strikes which is why it is important to seek shelter when a storm approaches. Heavy rain often accompanies thunderstorms which can cause dangerous flash flooding. Thunderstorms often produce high winds which can threaten property and life. It is important to stay informed when severe weather threatens your area by monitoring your local TV station and listening to a NOAA Weather Radio.
