The word winter did not originally mean snow.

The word evolved from the European word wed meaning "wet, water, and wash."

The Germanic word wintruz, which means "time of water," caused the word to evolve into the word that is familiar to us.

Although we think of winter as a snowy season, it is more of a wet season in other parts of the world.
