With the exception of a three-minute tornado reported Feb. 27 in California, the month was completely tornado free.
Myvalleyweather.com Meteorologist Paul Wetzl said this is a rare occurrence. This year there have been 42 reported tornadoes, well behind the average, he said.
"Reported tornadoes this season have been very low so far due to the fact that the overall weather pattern has featured bigger storms up the east coast and have brought more snow issues instead of severe storms," Wetzl said.
Of the 42 reported tornadoes, most were reported in January, he said. This will change as we enter spring, Wetzl said.
"We're currently in El Nino and spring seasons in El Nino typically feature very stormy weather patterns in the southern plains and into the south east," Wetzl said. "That should lead to quite a bit this spring."
There are generally very few tornadoes in California, which averages around five per year, Wetzl said. Ohio, in contrast, averages about 16 tornadoes per year, he said.
