Winter season is the coldest season of the year, and it, too, has its coldest point. Even though the shortest day of the year is around December 21, the coldest day is not for almost another month. This is due to the fact that there is a "lag period" in the cooling of the massive water and land around the Northern Hemisphere.

It is no secret that January is our coldest month of the year.

Let's take a look at January and find the coldest days on average here in Northeast Ohio.

Starting on January 6, the average high and low for the year drop to their coldest readings. The average high drops to 32° and the average low drops to 19°. On average, it does not get any colder throughout the course of the year. Keep in mind that it has to get colder, and warmer, to create an average. So, it does not mean that it does not get colder than 19° around here. Back to the story. This cold period continues for 17 days and ends on January 22. It gets warmer each day after that.

So, if we find the middle of this cold stretch, we can find the coldest day of the year on average. That date is January 14.

Have a great winter...
