SPRING FORWARD written by Michael Downing traces the history of falsifying the clock to enjoy more sunshine. English architect, William Willett who was an avid golfer and hunter, who in 1907 published the pamphlet, "The Waste of Daylight" which proposed the Daylight Saving Act. He wanted to push the clock ahead by 80 minutes every spring.
It is generally believed that farmers were behind the time change, but farmers in both England and America were mostly against the idea of "messing then clock". At the conclusion of World War I shopkeepers and merchants, not assembly line workers and laborers were in favor of daylight saving because they wanted more relaxation time to play golf.
