High pressure building through Saturday night will give us a dry and sunny Super Bowl SUNday. Clouds lingering in the morning will push off allowing for some sunshine and temperatures near 40. That high pressure system will remain in control until Tuesday when our next cold front arrives. Not a lot of moisture is associated with this front but we do have a slight chance to see some snow on Tuesday. Once the front moves through we will also see a small blast of cold air that will keep our temperatures closer to normal for the rest of the week. Thursday a Clipper system will push through the area bringing a chance for snow showers Thursday evening and through the day on Friday. Highs will remain in the 30s for most of the week with lows in the 20s.

January 2012 turned out to be a wet one. The month had a grand total of 4.51 inches of precipitation which made it 1.96 inches above normal. It was not enough precipitation to push January 2012 into the top-ten list. We would have needed to reach 4.88 inches to make it into that list.

The wettest day was on the 17th with 0.59 inches of precipitation. We had either rain or snow on 24 days during the month. We saw some sort of precipitation on 77% of the days during the month!

January 2012 turned out to be a snowy one. In fact, the month ended up being number nine in the top ten list of snowy Januaries. These records are compiled at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Airport. The month ended up with 26.2 inches of snow.

The snowiest day was on the 2nd when we picked up 4.8 inches.

The month did not seem so snowy as each time it would snow, the warm temperatures would rapidly melt it away.

Make sure to click through the images above to see the top ten snowy Januaries.

During Sunday, January 29, a potent squall line of snow pushed through the Mahoning Valley late Sunday afternoon. When the snow came down, it was extremely intense reducing visibilities to less than a quarter of a mile. The brief period of intense snow was brought on by strong gusty winds and even flashes of lightning.

This type of winter weather event is commonly known as "thundersnow". While lightning is normally associated with springtime thunderstorms, it can, and often does, occur during heavy snow in the winter season.

Lightning can strike objects and people. According to lightningsaftey.com, a man was hit by lightning during a blizzard in Minneapolis, Minnesota in March, 1996. Also, another man in Vail, Colorado was struck by lightning during a snowstorm in April, 1996. This proves that it can be just as dangerous to be outside during thundersnow as it is during a severe thunderstorm.
